Blogs used to infect PCs with spyware and malware

I note a story on the BBC Technology site which says Spyware and Malware authors have copped on to the popularity of blogs and are now using them as vectors to host spyware and malware to infect people lured to the blog.

I’m surprised it took so long for them to come up with this.

Of course I can be smug – I use a Mac so I don’t have to worry about Spyware and Malware!

  1. I remember Bernie posting about this a while back..apperently one of the worst services for it is blogger….. People using the next blog button are easy targets as they haven’t a clue what the next page will bring up. Never one to praise microsoft but I have to say that their new anti spyware has worked wonders on my laptop..

Sure Caoimhe, I use that tool extensively as well on PCs and servers I manage – however, praising Microsoft for this application is inappropriate because if they hadn’t written such shoddy software in the first place, there’d be no requirement for this application.

For example, I have no antivirus software and no anti-spyware software installed on my Mac – I don’t need them because there are no viruses or spyware, to speak of, for the Mac.

Why? Don’t be fooled by people who cite market share or anti-Microsoft bias as the reasons why there is more spyware and malware for Microsoft – the reality is that there are so many security holes in Microsoft’s software, it is a trivial matter to write exploits for Windows.

Apple’s OS X operating system, on the other hand, is based on peer reviewed open source software and thus is secure.
