Ok, FrankP and Alan (from Spoiltchild) had a great discussion in the comments of my post about using a Subscribe button and between them came up with the idea of combining a Subscribe button with a Help button – the Help button to lead to an explanatory page about Subscribing and RSS.
Frank designed a Help button and layout (below) and also came up with wording for a Help page.
I have decided to implement both on this site as I think it is a great way of educating visitors who might be intimidated by a button with RSS or XML on it.

I put all the main points I feel i’ve learned over the last day or so together in a somewhat coherent form over on my site.

New subscribe buttons
If you look towards the right hand side of my page, at the bottom of the sidebar you will notice I have dropped in a couple of what you will recognise as new orange XML icons.
